Ancestors--- anyone who is regarded as a precursor or forerunner of a later person.
1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, (Hebrews 12:1, New King James Version)

Within the past thirty day two of my most respected elders and mentors have been unexpectedly called home to be with our Heavenly Father. Both of these individual went home on the 27 th of the month…Both of these individual in my opinion have graduated along with my father, from the ranks of Respected Elder to Ancestor. In our cultural tradition the conscious ones are aware of the value of the ancestors and their contribution to our present life as we know it. The ancestors especially the most recently promoted ancestors seem to gain a stronger voice in our memories as we reverently search our hearts and minds for the last words that they said to us. As we hold the image of our ancestors in our hearts and minds our memory of their words, works and actions speak to us in deeper and more impacting ways.

With the recent Homegoing of my Father the Hon. Yahya B.A. Muhammad, and these two mentors Dr. Robert Bennett and Pastor Cedric Hinson, I am made much more aware of my own mortality and the fleeting moments of time and opportunity that are lost when we do not bask in the light of their wisdom and frequently take advantage of an audience with them while they are still in the same earthly realm as you and I.

In some instances I took advantage of their wisdom and presence on earth by making the phone call answering the gentle tug in my heart that prompted me to call. But at the same time I am painfully aware that there were long stints between the those glorious dialogs that I did not take advantage of their presence. I guess I took it for granted that I would always have access to these faithful souls. And I may still have access to them but along with many others i have forgotten how to speak to the living and the dead without spirit mediums, cell phone, microphones and the internet. Do you remember?

Some of our elders and none of our ancestors even use these high-tech substitutes for a handwritten letters or cards and or a face-to-face conversation. WE need to seize every opportunity to talk with our Elders before they make their transition to the ranks of Ancestors. (We actually need to value all people even youth for we know not the hour they may be called home too.)

The sudden death of my friends and mentors has me valuing not just days but moments with loved ones, It has me wondering why them? Why Now? And Why not Me? I sense that I still needed them but, now what? Who is going to listen to me now? And Who is going to give me wise advise now that that they are gone? I feel the tug on my life calling me to a graduation into the ranks of Elder and anticipating my call to the glorious ranks of ANCESTOR…. Please do not cry too much for me when I am gone have a celebration; a grand homegoing celebration.

After reading this blog feel free to listen to the message that I gave on Independence Day 2010. I call this message “Precious” based on Psalm 116:15.
15 Precious in the sight of the LORD
Is the death of His saints.
(Psalm 116:15, New King James Version) The Precious message starts about 3 ½ min. into the track. ( Just in case you want to skip my discussion independence Day.)

Below is a link to an audio message that I recently gave in honor for our recently dearly departed Church Member. As you listen take out the specific name I mentioned and insert your loved ones name.

You may have to cut and paste the address into your broswer and wait for a download until I figure out how to get the message to you quicker.

If you are so lead share this message with others and receive your healing and deliverance from fear of DEATH.

Homegoing Celebration

Homegoing Celebration,

In the African American Community a Homegoing Celebration is what is commonly called a funeral by the broader community.  WE call these events Homegoings  because they express our faith in a Heavenly Father that calls His children home to live Eternally with Him. We call them celebrations because they express our faith and joy in knowing our loved on and we celebrate his or her life as we knew it. We believe that death is a door way;  death is a right of passage to a better life in which suffering has ceased and  joy is eternal. We celebrate knowing that our loved one is in Eternal life after death. This blog and poem is dedicated to PASTOR CEDRIC HINSON

Going Home…

Earth has swallowed me

In a maze of concrete and steel.

No Soft places

Soft spaces

Carried by a Silver dragon,

Regurgitated once again

To ascend above ground…

Going Home

This poem was written while waiting for the A train in the “Big Apple,” New York City 4.17.99 original intent was to send an unique postcard t my neighbor and friends.

Divine Appointments

2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels. (Hebrews 13:2, New King James Version)

Divine appointments are what this verse is all about to me. I have coined this term to describe when God has the paths of two individuals come together for a temporary but specific point in time. You know when you are in a divine appointment when you hear the content of the words spoken by the stranger or friend. The content of their message speaks directly to the point or issue that you were talking to God about. You may have just wondered silently in your heart and mind then before you know it you are face to face with an individual that has the word and or solution for which you have been looking.

Just last week I was saying to God, "Who can I talk too about this situation?"  It seemed impossible for me to talk about it because of my place and station. Moments later as I keep my known appointment with a fellow. God transformed the meeting into a Divine appointment. It was as though God took over the individual and spoke directly to my issue. I was amazed of the timing and the specificity of the words. I had just had a divine appointment.

Have you ever had one of these divine appointments? I think that they come to those who are open to them. That's why I quoted the verse above. If we heed these words and we allow ourselves to be open to the possibility of a divine appointment even with strangers. God can and will speak directly to us.

This reminds me of a movie I saw recently...I think the movie is called Yes Man!  The main character Jim Carey....used to say no! to every opportunity. Then he ran into a philosophy of saying YES to life and opportunities. The YES opened the door to all that he wanted. There is so much more to this film we can discuss later or off line.

For now let us be open to divine appointments. Let us say Yes LORD! Yes to your will and way even allowing for the stranger to brake into our ordered and structured world and bless us with a message from God.

Bag Lady what Cha going do with all them Bags?

Today, we heard a powerful message both in song and the preached word. We heard the musical sermons of Minister Tonoa Smith and we were challenged the Preached word of Minster Unitha L. Muhammad. Sister Muhammad creatively used the song Bad Lady by recording artist  Eryka Badu to illustrate our lives filled with too much negative material in the spiritual bags of our lives. Sister Muhammad preached deliverance from the spiritual weights of fear, anger, and rage anchored by regret. The liberating power of the Holy Spirit and faith in the resurrected Christ is offered as a weight lifting solution to the baggage of our lives.

Galatians 2:20  20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20, New King James Version

We were taught that once we allow the Holy Spirit to bear fruit in and through our lives we can move quickly toward our God given Goals. Galatians 5:20-24.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (Galatians 5:22-24, New King James Version)

Today if you sense this brief description of Min. Muhammad's message is speaking into your life then take the time to download this powerful message  and share it with your friends.

The Worship Experience:

The preached Word of God:

Be sure to listen to the whole message and pray a  prayer of deliverance with Minister Unitha L. Muhammad

"A Word to the Wise is Sufficient"

"A Word to the Wise is Sufficient" was an oft quoted saying of my beloved father the Late Hon. Yahya B.A. Muhammad. He would use the cryptic phrase almost as a warning. If he saw someone doing the wrong thing or going down a dangerous path he would speak a word of experience and advice to the person or persons and seal his admonition with the phrase a "A Word to the Wise is sufficient." There were times when I did not heed his wise advise and as a result I suffered the consequence of not receiving the "sufficient" word or the words that is just as much as is need to avoid the pain and suffering cause by ignoring the wise words of my elder.

It was in the light of this memory of my father that I taught my "Woman's Day" message. I had been challenged earlier in the week by the dynamic wise words of First Lady of West Angeles Church of God in Christ and wife of Bishop Charles Blake. Sister Mae Blake was teaching, at her annual luncheon "A Day in May with Mae," on the things that she learned from her Mother. I was moved by her message and I learned a great deal. In the same week my wise wife First Lady Unitha L. Muhammad of LA Community Church pointed my attention to a very disturbing video she had come across where some you men gone wild were instruction elderly women to smoke crack cocaine as an experiment to determine who had the best "product" of death and destruction. In these two contrasting imaged of womanhood I drew my sermonic message and interactive bible study. I hope that you will take the time to listen to these powerful messages and allow the word of God to be you word from the Wise that is enough to transform you life and lifestyle. The message is taken from the biblical text: Proverbs 14:1

1   The wise woman builds her house,
But the foolish pulls it down with her hands.
(Proverbs 14:1, New King James Version) and Titus 2:3-5  1-6Your job is to speak out on the things that make for solid doctrine. Guide older men into lives of temperance, dignity, and wisdom, into healthy faith, love, and endurance. Guide older women into lives of reverence so they end up as neither gossips nor drunks, but models of goodness. By looking at them, the younger women will know how to love their husbands and children, be virtuous and pure, keep a good house, be good wives. We don't want anyone looking down on God's Message because of their behavior. Also, guide the young men to live disciplined lives.  (Titus 2:3-5, The Message)

Are you Close Enough... John 19:25-27

In this sermon we continue our Mother's Day message entitled THANK YOU Mommy pt.2, by asking the questions Where would we be with our our mothers? and  Are you close enough to your children to know their friends and their God? We take the lessons learned from the example of Mary the mother of Jesus standing at the  foot of the cross and wondering did she hear God correctly concerning her special child?

Follow this link:

If you like the sermon the Bible Study is even better. We also add along with this interactive study of the message "Close Enough" we also answer the question how do we understand Biblical tithing in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament.

The Wise Woman builds her house.....

The Woman of LA Second held their first Annual Woman's Tea. The invited guest speaker was The First Lady of Garden Grove Church of God Rev. Kim Darby. She challenged the Women to build their individual spiritual house and the home through prayer and wise action. She told the woman it is good to be wise but also wise to be good. The message picks up after she had done her introduction of the test taken from The Book of Proverbs 14:1 " the Wise Woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tares hers down. (NIV)

“One of the names for God in the Bible is the Hebrew word El-Shadai. It appears in scripture as, The Almighty God. This does not describe him as just a powerful God, but rather, the all-sufficient one. The literal translation defines him as “The multi- breasted one.”

How to Choose a Good Bible for Personal Reading or Bible Study

This teaching is a response to questions asked in our Thursday night Bible about the original language of the Bible and the versions that come from it came to be. The other question this bible study answers is what is considered a good Bible? How does the King James Bible fit in the discussion? It there a good modern English Bible?

In this lesson I provided several types of bible for our class to handle and review. Later in the lesson I review the article choosing a Bible By Dr. Daniel B. Wallace. He was one of my Greek professors at Dallas Theological Seminary. I hope that you will enjoy the lesson and share it with your friends. Click on the link to hear the teaching:

I Got Everything I need... or Wait For it ....part 2

James teaches that the person that continuously allows themselves to doubt God and be in disharmony with what He has already revealed to them, then they are like people in a dinky boat floating on the waves of the turbulent sea being thrown around like a basketball on a good passing team.  Its like WE are being handled by the trials and tossed by every passing thought like a basket ball on a great passing team.

The biblical word picture that James gives is of a waves of a sea but not the mild waves that we see when we go to the beach…no this wave is a dashing or surging wave, a violent agitation of the sea like a continuous uninterrupted session of Tsunami like waves. That are

driven by the Wind…This is not holy winds these are evil winds…. These are the winds that knocked Peter off the water walking experience.

These are the winds of distraction, taking our attention off of God and on to ourselves…. (We begin looking at the size of the problems rather than the size of our God and we find ourselves drowning in the sea of our doubt.)

James in this book is teaching that the person who is divided in his or her mind about God and His positive desires and designs toward us is like a plastic bag on the highway…have you ever seen that plastic bag that every car passing pushes the plastic bag into the air and tosses it into the next coming car.

And Tossed (by Wind)

The word picture is a person being  tossed to and fro, in their mind….

This persons mind is wavering in uncertainty between hope and fear, between doing and not doing a thing.

The Bible teaches that a person like this is NOT to expect anything from the LORD….
Instead of waiting for it don’t wait… nothing is coming for you…You in you wavering double minded self will not receive anything.

In fact you will be unstable in all your ways…marriage, relationships, career, school, business and ministry. You my friend will be unstable in everything; because all these things are affected by a wavering mind. James closes that section with a Maxim: “A double minded man is unstable in all is ways”
a δψυχος dipsychos dē'-psü-khos 1) double minded (Two Souled)

a) wavering, uncertain, doubting
b) divided in interest ( he is like the lover who loves his or her spouse yet has allowed their mind to get caught up “in love with” an interloper some outsider then their mind is all confused and the person actually become unstable in all their ways.

A two souled man is a κατστατος, ä-kä-tä'-stä-tos. An κατστατος is a Person who is unstable, inconstant, restless in ALL their ways  (i.e. manner) of thinking, feeling, deciding.

SINGLEMINDEDNESS has its consequences and blessings. You have to stand behind your decision and accept the fall out good or bad. Singleminded will also bless you because it will keep you on track to avoid distractions.

SINGLEMINDEDNESS has its consequences and blessings. You have to stand behind your decision and accept the fall out good or bad. Singleminded will also bless you because it will keep you on track to avoid distractions.

There is Good News for you my unstable, inconstant and restless friend. You can be repaired. You can enter into the rest of God…. You can be focused and made one mind in God... You can decide to follow Jesus in His ways… You can ask God Today for the wisdom you need and do not vacillate in your decision to trust him and believe. He will come through for you….

Let the Prayer of Faith Heal you today…Ask for wisdom and anything else you need from God today….

Wait for It.....what you lack is on the way....

Wait on the inner strength and wisdom from God once you have asked for it. The revelation of your next step will come. The insight you are seeking will manifest just wait on it without doubting.

The ancient author James, teaches us In James1:5-8 that if we feel lack, if we feel destitute of the knowledge We need or if we sense and know lack (not having) then we should begin asking God to give us wisdom and knowledge to overcome the state of destitution and Lack.
Poverty in any area in our life should at least be a prompt for us to ask God for Wisdom and knowledge that we need to be perfect and mature lacking nothing.

We are actually commanded to ask God for Wisdom for the lacking lagging inferior areas in our lives. The word translated ASK means to 1) to beg, call for, crave, desire, require.

WE are commanded to fervently ask God for wisdom. We are not commanded to ask our pastor, neighbor or our BFF or BMF. We are commanded to ask God…in Prayer.

What we are waiting for is the Divine Word and Knowledge that leads us to our next step.

Today we discover that we have some Assistance during the multiple trials we find ourselves in. We are not alone…Remember this message is called Wait for it…. What are we waiting on? We are waiting on the “Giving God who Gives Wisdom….”

We are waiting for His revelation and direction to drop into our spirits and cause us to prosper…..Wait on it…The Giving God that gives wants to give to us and to everyone who asks. Our Giving God gives to all people simply, openly, frankly, sincerely.

This view of God as the giving God who gives freely may not be known. We tend to think that God is not willing to give us wisdom. In fact we think that God is holding back or hiding wisdom from us. Its not God hiding His wisdom from us, It is our own doubt and unbelief that keeps us from the wisdom of God that we need.

8 Souls Baptized at LA Second… Sunday April 25, 2010

We are still rejoicing over the LORDS’s presence at our baptismal service at LA Second Community Church. Yesterday, I got to experience one of the highest joys of pastoring a local congregation: baptism.

Immediately after our regular Sunday Morning Worship, we had the honor of baptizing three adults and five children. All the candidates completed my two-hour intensive Baptism Preparation Class. This baptism was a first for me as a senior pastor. I can hardly contain my excitement.

This Baptism was previously planned to take place after our January ordination classes. But after I took the History, Polity and Doctrine course with Denny, the LORD convicted me about my flippant attitude toward the sacrament of Baptism. The conviction was prompted by reading the class handout entitled The DIDACHE, or the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, (Translated by Charles H. Hoole).

In the Seventh chapter it says “…But before the baptism, let him who baptizeth and him who is baptized fast previously, and any others who may be able. And thou shalt command him who is baptized to fast one or two days before.”  After pondering the reverence with which the early church approached the sacrament of Baptism I realized that this means of grace is far more important than just checking off another pastoral task competed.

The LORD heightened the Baptismal experience for me by allowing me the honor of baptizing my four children. They were assisting me at the church while I was preparing the baptismal pool, and my eldest son told me on the ride home that he wanted to be baptized. His brothers and sister chimed in as well, in the affirmative. I had to work hard to get them through the preparation material. However, God’s grace made it possible.

Two of the adults baptized on Sunday have joined the church since I have been appointed pastor. They regularly attend our Thursday night interactive bible study along with Andrew. Andrew -- a long time member of LA Second – also attended the mandatory bible studies for the baptism and as he was helping me set up the pool he told me that he wanted to follow the LORD in Baptism. I asked him what prompted him to be baptized, and he told me that the LORD pulled on his heart through my teachings. All I could do is offer praise to our God.

Special thanks to Pastors Kevin Robinson and Ruben Luna, of Marina Christian Fellowship, for their sound advice and assistance in getting the Baptismal pool to LA Second Community Church, where we are Equipping Lives to Love and Serve Humanity.

No Doubt….

The title for this week’s sermon is NO DOUBT…. The title is a play on the words of the popular colloquial expression NO DOUBT. No doubt is the affirmative response given when statement are made which are so obviously based in factual observable evidence that it leaves no room for doubt. Therefore, the hearer of the statement can respond with the affirmative phrase NO DOUBT. This message is the second in the series simply called “James: On Practical Matter of Faith” In this message we learn that God has already made provisions to deal with the times in our life when we feel like we are lagging behind others or feeling inferior.

If you want to learn more about His provisions for your sense of lack then be sure to down load this week’s Message entitled NO DOUBT...

Do YOU have the Goods?

Until recently, the Book of James has always been a troubling book for me. I could hardly get through the first four verses because I just DID NOT have the goods?

You may ask what are the goods. The Goods is a quality of life and Attitude that sees all trials and tests that we fall into as being a wonderful gift from God and a sign that you are growing in your faith and Trust in God.

I just did not have the goods, every time the adversity or a struggle came my way I ran the other way screaming the Devil is a liar.. or some other religious sounding thing trying to avoid the pain and discomfort of Growth on the path way toward spiritual maturity.

James seems to be telling us within the first few versus of his book that we have go to change our perspective on life's challenges, trials and tribulation. He tells us to count it all joy when we fall into diverse trials because they will work to our advantage. Now do you see why I avoided this dude James. He is a little too real for me.

In the message I have attached entitled "Do YOU have the Goods?" I deal with some introductory issues of James and then I teach about why and how we can indeed count it all joy when we fall into divers tribulations.....

If you want to know more about this powerful message then do the light work of cutting and pasting the following link into your browser and then, Down load the message Do YOU have the Goods? I hope by the end of the message you will be able to declare. I GOT IT....I got the Goods!

Video Sound bite of Dead But Not Done

[Due to technical difficulties we were not able to record the introduction of the Message Dead but Not Done.] In my introduction I spoke about the symbolism of New Clothes and the resurrection. Just like putting on new clothes we have to put on the new life and mind set of a resurrected being. We have to overcome the stuff that we inherited from our ancient ancestors who tried to cover up the nakedness of a strained relationship with God with fig leaves.

We received as our inheritance fear of God, a sense of vulnerability, strained relationship between the sexes all because of our disobedient obstinate spirit. The Good New is that faith in the Resurrected Christ delivers us from the burden of guilt, fear, and shame. For the resurrection is an empowering force in the believer.

Dr. Gregg A. Scott says "The Resurrection empowers the Church for the Freedom of Being, Disciple making-Disciples." (Matthew 28:18-20) The Holy Spirit is the resident indwelling presence of the living God with us always. Therefore, the death in your life and circumstances is not the end of the story it is only a delay....

What God wants us to do is to enter into the REST He has provided, The REST is the finished work of redemption. God by means of the Christ has brought you and I back from the pawn shop of heartbreak hotel, Disappointment Row, and Failure Avenue.
Because of the shed blood of the Christ (the redemption price) we have access to our own person Passover. When God sees the Blood on us appropriated by Faith then then He allows destruction and destroyer of our souls to PASSOVER us. Therefore, we no longer have to be slaves to our past. We no longer have to carry around the burden of our past transgressions or indiscretions. We are encouraged to seek first the rule of God in our lives and to practice His moral code. Once we do what He requires then all the "things" we desire of comfort in this life shall be added to us. This is true because God knows that a truly redeemed person will use his or her wealth for Kingdom work and affairs of loving the poor and needy among us and making sure that Kingdom needs are supplied. " But Seek ye first the kindgom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" Matthew 6:33

The significance of Christian Baptism pt 2

This week we contemplated some ideas about Jesus Christ. Did He know that he was going to die by Crucifixion? Did Jesus go to hell after he died? What is the significance of Christian Baptism? You can explore all these question as you listen in on our interactive Bible Study held on Thursday night at LA Second Community Church 2100 W 54th Street in Los Angeles 90062. The class starts at 6:00 PM we are finished class by 8:PM.

Baptism is more than just going in dry and coming out wet. It is more that just a public confession of an inward decision of faith. Check out the message.

Dead But Not Done

Resurrection Sunday was a powerful experience at LA 2ed. We meditated on the relevance of a resurrected Messiah to our lives. We discovered that Faith in God’s resurrected messiah gave us confidence in God validating our right deeds. One big idea we got was that incorporating Faith in God’s resurrected Messiah we can become empowered people who are not limited by the fear of death. WE are empowered to live and love powerfully.
